The Dental Implant Timeline Step-By-Step: What You Can Expect

Wondering what you can expect if you get dental implants at Nova Dental from Dr. Talar Guldalian? Here’s a step-by-step overview of the process, and what you can expect during your treatment.

1. Initial Consultation & Treatment Approval

First, you’ll need to set up a consultation with Dr. Guldalian to find out if you’re a good candidate for dental implants. She’ll perform a comprehensive oral exam and ensure that your mouth is healthy enough for an implant. If you’re approved, she will begin developing your treatment plan right away.

(Optional) Pre-Treatment Surgeries

You may need to have a few surgical treatments like a tooth extraction, bone ridge smoothing (alveoloplasty) or bone grafting. Dr. Guldalian will discuss these treatments with you if they’re required, and they must be completed before you can get an implant.

2. Implant Placement Surgery

Dr. Guldalian will connect you with an oral surgeon who can expertly place the titanium rod of the dental implant per her treatment plan. At your dental implant placement appointment, your doctor will clean and numb your mouth, and then surgically place a dental implant in the area where your missing tooth used to be. The area will be cleaned and stitched shut, and you’ll be sent home to heal and recover.

3. Healing, Recovery & Osseointegration

It takes about 2 weeks to recover from your initial surgery. However, it will take about 3-6 months for your implant to permanently bond with your oral tissue. During this time, you’ll see Dr. Guldalian for several follow-up appointments to track your healing and recovery.

4. Crafting Your Implant Restoration

During your follow-up appointments, Dr. Guldalian will take impressions and images of your teeth, gums, and dental implant. Using this information, she will create your implant restoration, such as a dental crown or bridge.

5. Placing Your Abutment

A few weeks before your final implant restoration placement, you’ll need to come in to have an abutment attached to your implant. The abutment is what connects your implant and your restoration, and ensures it’s held tightly in place. This process is minimally-invasive, and takes only a few minutes.

6. Placing Your Implant Restoration

Once you’ve completely healed from having your abutment placed, your final appointment at Nova Dental will be scheduled. Dr. Guldalian will check your dental implant restoration to make sure it fits properly, and make minor adjustments if necessary. Then, once everything looks good, it will be attached to your implant, restoring your smile and your bite. This completes the procedure. You’ll get instructions on caring for your new smile, then you’ll be sent home.
