Why Choose

A Pediatric Dentist?

Pediatric dentists are uniquely qualified to care for your child’s teeth, unlike general dentists. In addition to a standard dental degree, pediatric dentists must spend at least 2-3 more years in an accredited pediatric dentistry program.

During this time, pediatric dentists learn more about how to properly interact with children of all ages, how to provide informative and gentle care, and how to treat diseases and oral health conditions that are common in kids.

This means that they have a much deeper overall knowledge and understanding of the challenges that face kids of all ages, and can provide expert care for infants, toddlers, older kids, pre-teens, and teenagers.

If you want the best possible preventive care for your child, a pediatric dentist is the best choice. While a family dentist will provide great treatment for the entire family, they may not have the same depth of expertise and knowledge as a pediatric dentist. So schedule a consultation at Nova Dental today to get your little one the care they need.

Why Are baby teeth

So Important?

You may be wondering why dentists are so concerned with the health of your child’s baby teeth when they’re going to fall out naturally anyway. Why are baby teeth so important? There are a few reasons.

First, your child will keep their baby teeth for a long time. Their first few baby teeth won’t start to fall out until the age of 6, and the final set of baby molars doesn’t fall out until the age of 12-13, in most cases. So if your child has a cavity in their baby tooth or it has been chipped or damaged, it needs to be restored so that your child can eat, speak, and smile normally until it falls out naturally.

In addition, the baby teeth help form the “paths” that the adult teeth take when they begin to erupt. If your child loses one or more of their baby teeth before they’re supposed to, the surrounding teeth may begin to shift toward the empty socket, and the adult tooth is less likely to erupt properly.

For that reason, premature loss of baby teeth due to cavities or oral injuries should be avoided whenever possible. And if your child does end up losing a baby tooth early, they may need a “space maintainer” to keep the proper gap between their remaining teeth. This prosthetic sits in the gap formed by the missing tooth, and stops the other teeth from moving. This ensures proper oral development.

what age does a

Pediatric Dentist Treat?

Pediatric dentists treat kids of all ages, from infants to toddlers, older kids, and teenagers and pre-teens. No matter how old your child may be, they can get the care they need in Woburn, Winchester, or Burlington at Nova Dental.

Depending on the dentist and the situation, a pediatric dentist may be willing to see a patient until they’re 18 or 19 years old. Once a patient is in their 20s, they are usually referred to a general dentist in the area for further treatment.
